Los Angeles, December 3, 2012: Black Lotus, a leader in Layer 7 DDoS mitigation technology, has been named a finalist in the Excellence category of the 2013 SC Awards for outstanding leadership and achievement in information security. Black Lotus’ patent-pending Human Behavior Analysis (HBA) is recognized in the Best Emerging Technology category, which acknowledges companies with superior security products that help customers tackle today’s most pressing information technology (IT) challenges. The winner will be announced at the 2013 SC Awards U.S. ceremony to be held on Feb. 26, 2013 in San Francisco.

“Cutting-edge solutions are needed to fight the growing complexities of cyber attacks, and as a finalist in the SC Awards, Black Lotus has demonstrated the ability to execute innovative and comprehensive IT security measures,” said Illena Armstrong, vice president and editorial director of SC Magazine. “SC Magazine, our distinguished panel of expert judges and the entire industry will take a moment to recognize these efforts with this year’s awards gala.”

Hundreds of IT security companies nominated their solutions for consideration in the SC Awards and entries are evaluated by a jury hand-picked by SC Magazine’s editorial team for their breadth of knowledge and experience in the information security industry. The SC Award judges are luminaries from all walks of life – from end-user companies to the analyst and consulting communities to academia. Many are practicing and former chief security officers from the private and public sectors, who also may have been honored themselves at SC Awards galas in previous years. Not only are judges advised to review the materials provided by entrants, they are also asked to review any applicable research or analyst reports, as well as product reviews appearing in SC Magazine.

The SC Awards, now in its 16th year, are the premier global recognition for information technology (IT) security professionals and products that fend off the myriad security threats in today’s corporate world. The annual awards showcase the best solutions, services and professionals while recognizing achievement and technical excellence. SC Magazine distinguishes the achievements of the security professionals in the field, the innovations happening in the vendor and service provider communities and the fervent work of government, commercial and nonprofits.

“We’re extremely excited, and frankly overwhelmed by the level of positive reception that our patent-pending technology is attracting. Our selection is testament that new and innovative DDoS mitigation technologies are needed for security professionals to stay ahead of today’s complex threats to service availability,” said Jeffrey Lyon, president at Black Lotus.

“This year’s SC Awards are possibly the stiffest competition we’ve ever had,” said Illena Armstrong, vice president and editorial director of SC Magazine. “As information security continues to grow in importance this has only added more weight to our program. Recognition for the tireless efforts of the men and women providing information security to the organizations around the world is paramount to SC Magazine and we look forward to celebrating them at the SC Awards gala.”

Winners of this year’s SC Awards U.S. will be announced at a gala dinner and award ceremony to be held in San Francisco on Tuesday, Feb. 26, 2013.

Government Security News names Black Lotus as a Finalist in the Best Network Security category in GSN’s 4th Annual Homeland Security Awards competition

Los Angeles, November 11, 2012 - Government Security News has announced the finalists – including Black Lotus — in 34 different categories in its 4th Annual Homeland Security Awards competition, along with the names of the preemptive winners in another eight categories.

In the Best Network Security category, GSN identified Black Lotus as a finalist for its patent-pending Human Behavior Analysis (HBA) system which can detect whether a website visitor is a real human and accurately block malicious connections in order to mitigate Layer 7 DDoS attacks, keeping websites online. Black Lotus has already deployed this technology to government agencies such as the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office which used Black Lotus to defend against attacks during the 2012 GOP National Convention.

“It is such a great honor to be recognized as innovators in network security alongside esteemed finalists Fortinet and Palo Alto Networks. Our selection is evident of the need for new and innovative solutions in mitigating threats to availability in the government sector,” said Jeffrey Lyon, president of Black Lotus.

All winners will be announced — and celebrated — at a gala dinner GSN is hosting at the Washington, DC Convention Center on the evening of Thursday, Nov. 29, 2012. The finalists and winners were selected by a panel of objective judges, according to Jacob Goodwin, Editor-in-Chief of Government Security News.

“We received an extraordinary number of entries,” Goodwin said. “We have carefully reviewed each entry and are now very pleased to announce an exceptionally strong field of finalists.”

Provides availability security to expanding global network

Los Angeles, October 1, 2012 – Black Lotus, a leader in availability security and provider of distributed denial of service (DDoS) protection, today announced its partnership with VentraIP Group, one of Australia’s fastest growing providers of domain names and Web hosting services. Under the terms of the partnership, Black Lotus provides enterprise-grade DDoS protection to VentraIP’s expanding global network.

VentraIP uses the Black Lotus high-performance carrier network and attack monitoring platform to mitigate DDoS attacks against clients hosted on their network. Earlier this year, VentraIP’s clients experienced large-scale DDoS attacks, resulting in network degradation and site downtime. Black Lotus’ DDoS mitigation services help decrease turnover and preserve site uptime, preventing lost revenue and drop-off of legitimate traffic.

“As an Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) and an .au Domain Administration (auDA) accredited registrar, our partnership with Black Lotus for DDoS protection is an insurance policy for our clients that gives us peace of mind,” said Angelo Giuffrida, chief operating officer of VentraIP. “If an attack of this nature is being made against a client on our network, we now have a plan to mitigate it and allow our network to continue operating for the rest of our customers.”

“We’re seeing increasing incidents of DDoS attacks against company websites, both small and large,” said Jeffrey Lyon, president of Black Lotus. “VentraIP recognizes the potential risk to its customers, and our partnership allows the company to take the necessary steps to safeguard client sites and in many cases, their companies’ livelihoods.”

Black Lotus offers protection against DDoS attacks that typically penetrate slowly enough to bypass other available mitigation solutions. The widely used method of DDoS attack infiltrates the network at the application layer (Layer 7) and mimics acceptable Web traffic behavior, exhausting the resources of servers and resulting in service outages. Black Lotus monitors for this kind of traffic behavior and discerns between legitimate and malicious traffic with an intelligent DDoS mitigation platform, ensuring uptime continuity.

Following Black Lotus’ announcement of its patent-pending Human Behavior Analysis (HBA) technology last month, the company also won two awards recognizing its unique ability to discern between malicious botnet traffic and genuine human visitors to a website.

Hord Tipton, CISSP-ISSEP, CAP, CISA, executive director of (ISC)2. “The industry continues to face a crisis, due to a major shortage of qualified information security professionals, but through their efforts, the 2012 Americas ISLA winners are illustrating what can and is being done to attract more top personnel to the field and give them the knowledge and tools they need to combat the growing cyber security threat.”

Black Lotus won the Readers’ Choice Award in the “DDoS Protection” category for defending service providers and end users against insidious DDoS attacks. To identify these winners, Ping! Zine Magazine polled its viewership from the circulation of 50,000 subscribers, who recognized organizations in 15 different categories including Hosting Billing Service, Dedicated Server Hosting and Colocation.

Jared Townsend, website editor of Ping! Zine wrote in the Readers’ Choice issue, “While any web host surely promises its clientele the ability to get them up and running, we always return to the question, ‘Who’s the best to go with?’…This year, at Ping! Zine, we thought we’d do some exploring, attempting to identify the most proficient companies specializing in a number of categories.”

Today marks the long awaited launch of the i2Coalition, an organization that has been in the works for several months. Launched by a group of well known players in our market space, including ServInt, cPanel, Rackspace, and SoftLayer, the i2Coalition is the hosting industry’s voice in public policy which is currently dominated by publishers who wish to infringe upon our rights and make it more expensive to continue operating our businesses. These are expenses that are passed on to nearly every internet user in some way.

Our vice president, Shawn Marck became interested in giving hosting a voice in public policy when he attended the Save Hosting presentation with Christian Dawson of ServInt at HostingCon 2011 in San Diego. “You have to check out what Christian is doing, there are politicians considering bills that could really impact our industry.” This initiative later became the i2Coalition.

Personally, I became interested in the i2Coalition when it was pre-launched at the Web Host Industry Review event at Washington, DC in June of this year. The very next month, Black Lotus joined as a Founding Member. It is our position that the internet should be be completely free of censorship and that hosting companies should not be involved in the regulation or enforcement of content in anyway. We feel that joining the i2Coalition is the clear choice for any business in the hosting industry who wishes to continue operating free of government regulation. Last year, Christian and his supporters with Save Hosting were successful in bringing attention to and preventing the adoption of SOPA and PIPA but we are still substantially outgunned by media and entertainment companies who want to make it more difficult to do business on the internet. This is a grassroots initiative that requires the support of every like minded hosting provider.

Supporting free enterprise online is not free. To show our support for the i2Coalition and raise funds for this noble cause, Black Lotus will be donating 10% of all revenue generated by AvailSec 2013, or all net proceeds, which ever is larger.

AvailSec is all about availability security, but the security of your internet company also depends on sound public policy. Attend AvailSec to collaborate with the availability security and hosting industry, and hear Christian Dawson’s presentation on the i2Coalition, “The Security of the Entire Internet.”

DDoS protection technology mitigates, stops malicious botnet Layer 7 attacks

Los Angeles, September 10, 2012 – Black Lotus, a leader in availability security and a provider of distributed denial of service (DDoS) protection, today unveiled its patent-pending Human Behavior Analysis (HBA) technology to protect Web hosts and e-commerce companies against DDoS attacks. Black Lotus first began developing HBA in 2009 when it observed complex, insidious application layer (Layer 7) attacks against websites. The technology allows Black Lotus customers to send all Web traffic through the DDoS-protected HBA engine and receive only known human users in return, which is critical to ensure client site uptime.

“HBA is the only availability security technology that can effectively judge whether a site visitor is human without relying on any packet or request header data,” said Jeffrey Lyon, Black Lotus president and CEO. “HBA leverages numerous patent-pending algorithms that observe an incoming site visitor and, when matched, tell the engine whether the visitor is a human or a robot. In cases where the algorithm is not a match, the visitor is further observed and flagged if it performs suspicious activity.”

John Larsen, systems engineer of javapipe.com said, “Quality of service to our clients has always been our highest priority. We utilize Black Lotus for their DDoS mitigation tools to keep our clients’ servers safe and secure. They provide the same level of quality, assurance and peace of mind that our clients have always expected of us.”

Layer 7 attacks against websites penetrate slowly enough to bypass commercially available DDoS mitigation packet filters, mimicking acceptable Web traffic behavior to exhaust the resources of the server, resulting in service outages. Black Lotus saw the industry need for an intelligent DDoS mitigation platform that could understand real versus malicious Web traffic without relying on standard conventions. Available as a software-as-a-service (SaaS) offering, HBA renders intelligent filtering decisions and ensures thousands of websites enjoy uptime continuity.

DDoS protection technology mitigates, stops malicious Layer 7 botnet attacks for Florida law enforcement agency

Los Angeles and Tampa, Fla., August 27, 2012 – Black Lotus, a leader in availability security and a provider of distributed denial of service (DDoS) protection, today announced that the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office (HCSO) has selected Black Lotus’ patent-pending technology to ensure the security of its information systems. The technology protects the entire HCSO network from threats against availability and inspects its Web traffic through the DDoS-protected Human Behavior Analysis (HBA) engine, serving only verified human users in return, a technique that is critical to ensuring complete service continuity.

The HCSO website is a central repository for residents of one of Florida’s largest counties, and it offers information and resources on topics such as emergency services, special investigation services and homeland security, as well as updates on local crime. The ability to provide citizens access to this information around the clock is a high priority for the HCSO IT team.

“DDoS attacks are no longer isolated occurrences. Virtually anyone with a website is at risk,” said Jeffrey Lyon, President of Black Lotus. “Given the potential for losses, any company or agency that depends on its website as its primary platform for revenue or communication must form a holistic DDoS protection plan.”

Black Lotus offers protection against DDoS attacks that typically penetrate slowly enough to bypass commercially available mitigation solutions. This widely used method of attack infiltrates the network at the application layer and mimics acceptable Web traffic behavior, exhausting the resources of servers and resulting in service outages. Black Lotus provides HCSO with an intelligent DDoS mitigation platform that monitors the site for this kind of traffic behavior and distinguishes between legitimate and malicious site traffic, ensuring uptime continuity.

Shawn Marck recognized for innovation in DDoS protection technology

Los Angeles, August 6, 2012 – Black Lotus, a leader in availability security and provider of distributed denial of service (DDoS) protection, today announced that its Vice President, Shawn Marck, was named a finalist by the International Information Systems Security Certification Consortium (ISC)²® (“ISC-squared”) in its inaugural Americas Information Security Leadership (Americas ISLA) Awards. Americas ISLA Awards judges recognized Marck for his research and development of Black Lotus’s patent-pending Layer 7 attack mitigation strategy. (ISC)² is the world’s largest information security professional body and administrators of the CISSP®.

“Earning this recognition in the first year of the Americas ISLA Awards validates our security research and development work at Black Lotus,” said Shawn Marck, Vice President of Black Lotus. “DDoS attacks continue to plague virtually anyone with a website. Black Lotus is constantly looking for new methods to address this problem. Our intuitive technology and proactive protection strategies defend users against application-level Layer 7 attacks.”

With the success of its ISLA program in the U.S. and Asia-Pacific regions, (ISC)² expanded last year to laud the accomplishments of private and public sector industry leaders who are driving change in the information security workforce throughout the Americas. The program recognizes professionals who are leading initiatives that result in a stronger, more qualified information security workforce in North, Central and South America in the categories of:

Senior Information Security Professional

Managerial Professional for an Information Security Project

Information Security Practitioner

Up-and-Coming Information Security Professional

Special Recognition – “Community Service Star”

“Expanding the ISLA program to the Americas last year was a logical step for us given the wealth of information security innovation, leadership and talent in this region,” said W. Hord Tipton, CISSP-ISSEP, CAP, CISA, and executive director of (ISC)². “We were pleased with the caliber of finalists, and we congratulate them on their pioneering achievements. With the acute shortage of qualified information security personnel, the ISLA program provides a platform for these information security leaders to inspire the industry and their peers to shape the future of this critical profession.”

(ISC)² will announce the ISLA winners at a gala dinner on September 12, 2012 at The Franklin Institute in Philadelphia.
