Hybrid DDoS Mitigation using the MitigationPro appliance

Hardware based DDoS mitigation solutions are an attractive option for companies who are also network operators and wish to keep resources in-house or endeavor to service customers internally in order to minimize latency and maintain a strong brand image and sense of propriety. The Black Lotus MitigationPro by IntruGuard is a leading solution for service providers seeking to achieve these goals.

One of the major caveats of using a DDoS mitigation appliance in-house is that the effective operation of the device depends on the native resilience of your network which often requires 6 to 7 figures of capital expenditures to achieve, not to mention a genuine 24/7/365 network operations center staffed with qualified engineers. For many companies this is not an option, or the cost is simply too prohibitive.

Hybrid DDoS Mitigation solutions from Black Lotus address these issues by coupling in-house DDoS mitigation hardware with remote solutions such as DDoS mitigation over IP transit or GRE tunnel. The concept is simple: Consult with Black Lotus engineers to develop an on-site implementation of the MitigationPro appliances, establish a SupportPro Comprehensive contract to encompass full management of your DDoS mitigation infrastructure, and develop a plan for strategically offloading multi-10G of DDoS traffic to the Black Lotus network for pre-scrubbing before receiving the traffic over your public transit.

This ubiquitous “in the cloud” solution is then monitored around the clock at the Black Lotus NOC. Traffic flows from devices handling DDoS protected traffic are sent to the Black Lotus Attack Monitoring Platform for observation and analysis by Black Lotus engineers. In the event that a problematic attack is identified, Black Lotus engineers will remotely console your MitigationPro appliances to determine the exact composition of an attack and implement measures to mitigate the attack as appropriate. Network impacting attacks will be moved to the Black Lotus network for mitigation, either by your request or as a proactive measure, depending on the plan that we develop together.

Hybrid DDoS Mitigation from Black Lotus is the only solution that enables a relatively small investment in DDoS mitigation hardware to yield maximum performance and exponential, on demand scalability “in the cloud” while allowing you to keep your customers where they belong: With you.

Gain real time intelligence through the Attack Monitoring Platform

Advanced users, engineers, and executives will appreciate the ability to gain intelligence through live reporting on the Attack Monitoring Platform which is available on the Mitigation Critical level of service. This simple, easy to read reporting provides graphs generated from aggregate flow data originating on Black Lotus edge routers. See attacks as they occur with a delay of less than 5 minutes. View data on a per IP or per IP group basis and see both bits and packets per second. On all services, you can request historical attack data in CSV format.

DDoS mitigation over IP transit

Companies in the Los Angeles metro region benefit from unparalleled performance and availability by directly connecting to the Black Lotus network.
By extension, this service is available at other major carrier hotels in San Francisco, San Jose, Seattle, and Phoenix with modest latency overhead. Companies outside of these markets can deploy anywhere in the world using our Generic Routing Encapsulation (GRE) service.

DDoS mitigation over GRE tunnel

DDoS protected GRE tunnel services are available anywhere in the world where a statically addressed, commercial Internet connection is available. GRE tunneling allows us to route IP space to your network which is pre-filtered upon arrival. You should have a switch or router capable of establishing GRE. Black Lotus experienced engineers will assist in establishing a remote tunnel and will announce customer IP space from the Los Angeles facility via BGP effectively offering a Clean Traffic solution. Networks which do not speak BGP can receive IP space directly from Black Lotus for an always on, permanently established protection service.

When speaking BGP, you have the added flexibility of asking us to announce your IP space on an individual subnet basis (minimum /24 announcement), only when protection is needed. This can be communicated to us by opening a support request or by asking us to monitor your network flows and determine when use of a BGP announcement is necessary.

One key benefit of using a GRE tunnel is latency. It is only necessary to use the tunnel on ingress traffic, therefore egress traffic can continue to route via your local carrier, resulting in considerable latency improvements when compared to proxy based solutions.
